Yamaha SG50 STING

Hello there!

Today I will be picking up a Yamaha Sting project knallert, with extra parts and frame. I’m going to restore it as cheaply as possible for bow, just so that it drives.

I’ve been strolling through the internet to find a good parts site, but haven’t gound anything yet in Germany, Netherlands or Belgium. I am giving it a try with you guys in DK 😁

I have already found a Manual, Parts List and brochure. If there’s any other information I would be very glad!

Tonight I will post some pictures!

Hello!

Sting was pretty popular in Denmark, haven't seen many outside our borders. Where are you from?

I’m from Flanders in Belgium, but I do believe it’s a German Sting.

They were available in the Netherlands and Belgium though. But pretty rare nevertheless.

Thanks for the sites, I’ll post some pictures this evening!

So this is the Sting, overall a very nice base to begin with!

It was a really good deal! I paid 150 euros for it (+- 1100Kr), with it came a second frame and lots and lots of extra parts. He actually gave me 60 procent of another sting with it. So I’m a happy kid at the moment 😁

Update on the Sting;

The motor is being revised momentarily, I‘ve bought a workshop manual en some documentation!

Still looking for fenders, but when the motor gets back, I‘m pretty much fone with it. The electronics and cabling are in a good state, the wheels and brakes also.
Pretty excited but also doubtfull on how the whole oil injection system will work.

I had a SA50 Passola years ago where i wasent sure that the oil injection worked.
Over the periode where i measured gasoline and oil contsumption, i added 1% oil in the gasoline.
My test showed that the oil pump dident work, but no harm on the motor because of the 1% added :hihi

There is a few tricks to make sure that the engine will have no problems when you start using it.

As Erik said above - making sure that the oil pump works is mandatory. The oil pumps are very stable and only stops working when people tamper with them. The method Erik described is good, although I would have added 2%.
Next thing is the air filter. Make sure that it is in good order and that the foam is not crumbling. The housing must be intact and any additional holes closed. The rubber towards the carburettor must be intact as well.
These engines are known for running VERY hot. A standard (30 km/h) Sting can easily reach 230°C on top of the cylinder on a good day. Therefore it is mandatory to let them run rich. Do not underestimate this.

When you are getting the moped back together, make sure that you fit a 12V/25W halogen bulb (Piaggio Ape uses same bulb) in the headlight and that you remove the screen in the headlight too. The sting has a 70W generator and the headlight is exceptionally good. Make sure that the voltage limiter (right side, below the seat) is working, or you will low the bulbs. If your Sting is without stoplight, you can change the rear light bulb for a 10W for added safety.

I’ll keep this in mind, I also have another reserve Oil pump.

I’ve found the rear mud guard, it’s fully intact with the backlights en number plate holder.
If everything goes right, I’ll be trying it out before summer comes!

So little update,

I got a bit lucky! I found a project Sting, wich included extra motor, ALL of the fenders, also the motor protectors, extra frame,… to much to describe.

So situation at the moment is as follows;

I have a complete Sting, with choice between White or black fender set!
I have one extra Sting wich will be for sale, it will include some of the fenders!
I don‘t know yet if to sell it in parts or as a whole project!
I will include a picture of the Sting wich is for sale!
